Seaweed
is a large alga growing at tideland or sub-tideland. There are 3
series of alga including green alga, brown alga and red alga. According
to the research result, seaweed contains multifold amino acids,
unsaturated fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and fucoidan incomparable
by land plants. It has a great market and application potential.
The wide application of seaweed
has a long history. There are lots of records concerning the utilization
of seaweed to produce food or cure some diseases in ancient China
and Japan. Greek used seaweed as animal feed as early as the year
100BC, and the ancient Tonga people firmly believed that alga could
bring them healthy and long life, and they have taken seaweed as
food since 3,000 years ago.
Along
with the economic development and the rapid expansion of peoples’
knowledge, the traditional nutritional substances can no longer
meet human’s needs; meanwhile, the utilization and effects of seaweed
products have drawn great affection of mankind. It is found that
Seaweed imbibes many rare minerals in sea water. These rare minerals
are transformed to chelate organic matters, which can be absorbed
easily by animals. During the prosperous growing period, seaweed
contains large quantities of active substances including UGF. If
these active matters can be extracted and added to animal fodder
as ingredients, it will greatly enhance the feed biotransformation
and promote the healthy growth of animals. In addition seaweed supernatural
compositions can make people more healthy, improve immunity and
antiviral capacity. According
to different requirements, seaweed has been applied in feedstuff,
food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical fields, and now is widely applied
in all over the world, especially in Europe, America and Southeast
Asia
